Below is a link to the presentation I gave at Sheffield Hallam University on the module Game Software Project Management about Game Marketing Methods.
Marketing
Connecting with your audience is absolutely critical to the success of your game and is something you should take seriously and adopt a professional understanding. I’ll cover some of the high level points here and provide links to some interesting articles around the web on how to maximise social media communication for different business types.
In a world of freelancers, contractors and small, tight development communities. Everyone is on the public face of their business and reputation.
We are all constantly marketing something, be it our company or ourselves in one shape or another. Everything we do matters – your web-site, your comments in forums, the clothes you wear. It’s about the message we convey in our appearance, our design, our gameplay, our technology, our ethics and most importantly our interactions with others. The sooner we realise this the better.
“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” – Andy Warhol, 1968
Time has become compressed, 15 minutes is a long time now. Move fast or get left behind.
The take away here is that everything has a much shorter lifetime now. Recognise that your job won’t be for life, your game will be forgotten within 2 months of launch, 10hrs of gameplay is a lifetime, even the massive investment in a typically massively multiplayer online game will only last 3 years.
Things change rapidly and you need to be prepared with your next successful venture, always think ahead, always expect change, never be complacent.
